New Tax Credit Makes Water Heaters A Hot Item!

If you've been putting off replacing or upgrading your home's water heater, you have officially run out of excuses. That's because the new economic stimulus package offers bigger, more advantageous tax credits than ever before.
 
We're not talking just a few bucks. This is real money. Tax credits directly reduce the amount of income tax you have to pay. So if you receive a $100 tax credit, you pay $100 less to Uncle Sam.
 
You may have already taken advantage of previously existing tax credits to upgrade your furnace, install more insulation or put in new windows. But those tax credits for high efficiency home improvements maxed out at $500.
 
The new stimulus plan signed on February 17, 2009 extended the Energy Efficiency Tax Credits through 2010 and raised the cap to $1,500. So even if you already hit your cap on the old plan, are now eligible for another $1500.
 
Don't forget that the big idea is to encourage energy efficiency, so only Energy Star approved models / units that meet minimum standards are eligible for the credit. For water heaters, that includes:

• Whole home gas condensing, oil and propane models with an energy factor >= 0.8 or ones that have a thermal efficiency of at least 90%. 
• Electric heat pump versions with a qualifying energy factor >= 2.0 
• Gas tankless units with an energy factor >= 0.82.
