Make sure tackling plumbing problems are part of your spring cleaning.
Now that you and your house have survived the formidable frigidness of winter, it’s time to investigate your plumbing system and make sure you’re ready for the inevitable high volume of summer. That’s right, it’s spring plumbing checklist time!
Since the weather is so nice, you might as well start outside. There you should inspect all exposed outdoor plumbing for leaks, cracks or loose fittings that may have been caused by extremely cold weather. Sprinkler systems and exterior faucets are prime candidates for damage, especially if you didn’t drain and cover them in the fall.
If you have a septic tank, you might as well deal with that now too. If the tank is more than halfway full, you should go ahead and schedule a pumping. Better now than in the heat of summer.
Your plumbing vents deserve a good once over also, just to make sure nothing is clogged or cracked. The last thing you want is for summer-heated sewer gas to back up into your house!
Now that you’ve checked outside, let’s move indoors.
Start with your water heater. If you haven’t drained that in a while, now is the time. Removing the sediment build up can give your tank a longer life.
Check under all sinks to make sure that all exposed plumbing is strong and secure. Pay careful attention to bathrooms that aren’t regularly used. Damage there could go undetected and cause serious problems later on.
It’s also a good idea to remove faucet handles and clean their insides. This prevents the screws from corroding. If you notice corrosion already, you’ll want to remove it or replace the screw.
If you aren’t doing it already, Spring is the perfect time to being a drain maintenance program. Apply Drainright® drain maintainer to each drain in your home to keep things running nice and smooth all year round.
Spring is also a great time to update a kitchen or bathroom. You’ve passed the manic holidays of winter and aren’t yet into the crazy days of summer. Even just upgrading your old faucets and fixtures can make your home feel fresher.
Of course if you’d rather have someone else spruce up your plumbing system, schedule an appointment with the service experts at Rescue Rooter a call anytime, day or night.
