Stop that leak for Fix A Leak Week
March 15-21, 2010
A small faucet or toilet leak can be a big problem.
Water efficiency – it makes sense for your wallet, your family, and your environment. WaterSense, An EPA Partnership Program, is promoting national Fix A Leak Week March 15 to 21, 2010.
In the United States, the average family of four uses 400 gallons of water each day. Add to that amount a leaky faucet and/or toilet, and you’re literally flushing your money away one drip at a time while impacting the water supply for future generations.
In a single home, a leaky faucet or leaky toilet can waste thousands of gallons of water each year. Nationwide that adds up to more than 1 trillion gallons of water leaks in home plumbing systems annually.
To find out whether you have a leak in your home, select a two-hour period when no water is being used. You can assume you have a leak somewhere if your water meter registers a change from the beginning to the end of that period.
Use a drop of food coloring in the tank of your toilet to detect leaks. If you see the color in the toilet bowl and you haven’t flushed, the toilet is leaking.
There are many simple ways to use water more wisely in your home:
• Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth.
• Take a five-minute shower, not a bath.
• Only use your washer and dishwasher for full loads.
• Replace old toilets with new high-efficiency models.
• Participate in Fix a Leak Week March 15-21!
• Contact ARS/Rescue Rooter to assess the water efficiency of your home and to identify and repair any leaks.
